This delightfully creepy sentence is Ultron’s motto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
So, naturally, I decided to sketch and calligraph it.
This is the first inking. I’d never really used a flex nib calligraphy pen before, so my shading and everything is just abysmally off. For a first time, though, I was pretty pleased. I decided to take it into Photoshop and clean it up a bit before vectoring.
I started cleaning it up in Photoshop with the Liquify tool and my handy Brush tool (I’m shockingly steady with a mouse!). I still wasn’t quite happy with it, and so sought the feedback of my college calligraphy teachers and went back to edit some more.
After trying to balance out my swashes and leading, I now have the (un)enviable task of vectoring it. I’m going to try using Illustrator’s built-in stroke-width tool, so I just have to draw one set of lines rather than two.
This is where I am right now. I’m mostly pleased (and still clearly trying to achieve greater balance on the right side!). I’m still implementing the process I talked about with my last big calligraphy project, which is really rewarding. I’ll update with my progress as I go!
